made it to denver

had fun getting out to denver, but i'm kinda tired right now. got back late with the batchelor and need to get some sleep before the wedding. currently it is 4:12 am friday am (detroit time) and i'm not going to make it much longer. who knows, we may be getting up in a few hours to fold programs for the wedding. . .and then set chairs up for the reception. fun times. tonight was fun, but that story will wait.

here are some pics from the beginning of the trip (click to enlarge):

here is the chief in the pre-charisian apartment. no melvin-ball so far, but maybe i will have to try out my new batting glove tomorrow (later today).

daniel gets on melvin's encrypted wirless. maybe he is looking at pics of santa fes.

here the chief simulates what it is like when the wind blows through his hair (don't ask).

yeah, we had pretty good seats. not bad for $5. . .but then again the rox stink. amazing to hear all the drunk guys cheering that they had a chance in the bottom of the 9th down 9-3 with 2 outs.

the purple line marks the one mile high zone. yeah, the game was going on and hardly anyone was there. we were sitting in the unofficial mets fan section. game was fun. . .maybe i'll put up more pics of the game later. . .good thing was it was children's backpack night. . .so the 3 of us got free kiddy packs.

wedding is later today. . .

heading to denver

i think i'm all set for denver. should be back saturday. . .might blog some while i'm out there, but don't hold your breath.

the warrior child asked, "why are you going to colorado?" i told him "to help the chief get married". this has satisfied him for a couple days, but yesterday he asked "does the chief need help to get married?"

move over geek squad

i'll not take the time to share my frustrations with the tech support at the blue man store (aka best buy), but i will share a pic of my children sporting their own version of the geek squad look.

we returned from ohio saturday night. heat has been oppressive as of late. a guy walking past me this morning made a statement about it being hot and then said, "sure beats snow, doesn't it?" my reply: "not today". he walked away saying he needed to just shut up. wow.

my missing ring has been found. the warrior child lost my college ring the last time we were at my mom's house and we spent a few hours looking for it that day. . .followed up by continuous looking by my mom (including going through trash and boxes) after we left. i found it when i carried a chair from the kitchen out to the living room. apparently he had placed it on a notch used to raise and lower the chair (this is my best guess after examining the chair). nice to have it back. he won't be allowed to play with my rings for a very long time. . .and good thing he isn't going with me to denver since one of my responsibilities is to hold on to the wedding rings for melvin and charis (i started to refer to him as the chief, but wasn't sure how to identify charis. send suggestions to dave@daveandnic.com . . . maybe someday it will become a poll.).

have i mentioned that my wife makes awesome iced coffees?

nfl fantasy football starts up soon. draft is over. i got stuck with t.owens. how lucky i am. i get a superstar that is injured and begging for more money.

redesign is coming. perhaps i will work on it during flights to and from denver. target date: august 1, 2005.

good morning

you may be too young (or too old) to remember this, but there used to be a commercial for a bubbly soap called calgon in which a world of troubles is transformed into paradise just by entering into a bath full of calgon bubbles. i had a similar experience this morning. the new kid woke me up at 6 by persistent screaming. . .which didn't really stop until about 7:40. sometime around 7 i turned on the exhaust fan in our bathroom, cranked on the shower and had an irish spring transformation. only instead of paradise, i was transported to that place in science fiction movies that looks exactly like home but is actually the opposite of home. in this place, there are no screaming children, but only peace and tranquility. unfortunately, this false reality only lasts the length of the shower (roughly 12 minutes) and i was quickly transported via the mothership back to the world of a screaming child and an older child wanting to be read to. this is actually an improvement over the peaceful "other-world". i can believe this existence. i have fun reading to my son (much of the time) and i really don't mind my daughter screaming (after i wake up). . .in fact i enjoy joining in the melodious effort. we blend well together. but for roughly 12 minutes, it was nice to escape and check in on that other place. perhaps tomorrow when i get there. . .i'll read a story and scream.

excitement at the store

if you only read blogs with great theological truths or fantastic paradoxi, please exit now and point your browser elsewhere. at best, this will serve as fodder for illustration.

i'll be heading out to denver in a little over a week. i hope i have the courage to come back. after tonight, who knows. i see from chief's blog that papa johns has a great deal out there. . .so i'm hoping we call the papa at least once while i'm out there. . .maybe after the mets/rockies game.

tonight we went to the store to look for some shoes, buy parts of a cow and stock up on diet coke. we found each of the items we needed, but the warrior children were on the path of resistance. the first born poked holes in the wrapping on the cow and decided to dance in the aisles with the top of his shorts hitting him just below the knees. fortunately, neither of us was arrested, but we still should consider getting him a belt or maybe suspenders. the new kid decided to pull clothes off the rack and throw herself on the ground. once i got her back in the cart, the other kid went on his own little expedition of the store and was later returned to us by store authorities. we saw some friends at the store, after i flapped my arms to get the wife's attention (i found a great lane and didn't want to give it up). the good news is that the cow made it home safely as did the diet coke and the shoes that the wife originally thought were dorky.

on wednesday, the warrior child is allowed to go back to eating dairy. . .so we are hitting the dq. i've explained to him the intricacies of the banana split and blizzard, but he has his heart set on a plain vanilla ice cream cone. i could attempt to muse about how in the complexity of life we really desire that which is simple. . .but i'm not in the mood.

site redesign is coming along. . .slowly and tediously (like a lot of my seminary papers). i hope to have something to show by end of week. . .but as crazy as this week's schedule looks, don't count on it. it is like the inter-city school site: coming soon. perhaps i will post a screen shot soon. . .but not tonight.

much to do yet tonight.

home from family camp

we arrived home safely and with no injuries, diseases, or vehicle difficulties. we did suffer the loss of our family camera. picked up another one on the way up to camp. smaller than the previous one, but not as small as i would've preferred. since the wife uses it most of the time, she got the most say in it.

the warrior children are still trying to readjust back to their former schedule/routine. it isn't as smooth a transition as we would like, but they will figure it out soon enough. one of my fond memories from this week was tuesday night. nicole and her sister were scrapbooking and i stayed with the kids. as the kids were winding down, landon was pretending to be a snake and he called me a tiger and auburn a lion. i told him that tigers were big cats and he asked what big snakes were. i told him that snakes are all snakes, but some snakes are big like anacondas and some snakes are small like garder snakes. he told me he was a small snake. i asked him if he was a garder snake. he said, "no, i'm a panda snake." i ended up telling him about the panda snakes at camp cobeac and how they hide from us and why we will never see a panda snake at camp cobeac. we never did. i love his imagination.

the next night the wife watched the children and allowed me to play age of empires with jconn. the wednesday night summer tradition lives on. took some jumping through hoops and climbing through windows (both microsoft and other varieties) to accomplish, but we finally were able to play.

i'm playing around with different photo album scripts. i think i found the one i'm going to use in the future. for a small demo with pics from family camp, point your browser here. more albums will come soon.

while at camp i learned that my brother had a small stroke in his brain stem. as shocking as it is to hear of a 31 year old having a stroke, it is even more difficult to hear that it is your brother. . .the one who is partially paralyzed from a brain tumor that he experienced almost 20 years ago.  the Lord keeps reminding me of the summer bible conference challenge a couple weeks ago. dr. paul downey reminded us that whatever happens it is never bad since God is always in charge and that He has promised that one day we will be glorified (which is a better promise than that things will always be "good" for us).

i sat in the balcony on sunday morning and was reminded that it is like the "minimum-security" portion of the auditorium. in that place, parental monitoring seems to be low and young ones are able to do whatever they please. i remember wanting to sit in the balcony. it always seemed like you could get away with more up there. . .especially if another kid was worse than you.

finalized travel arrangements for chief's wedding. almost down to the 2 week mark. looking forward to watching the mets play the rox. as for homerun derby here in motown. . .bobby abreau was off the charts. . .which proves, it doesn't matter how good you do against real pitching. as long as you can smack a bunch of easies in front of a drunk crowd, you are a hero. . .worth 13 mill a year.
